Everyone have their own take on what mods is good for them or not. You just have to find what works for you.
Not the first time someone come around and complain about things in the game that not even in the game vanilla, because they just slotted mods right out of the box and got no idea how the vanilla game work. So yeah, better to play the game vanilla to start with so you learn the ins and outs before start use mods.
Mostly every mod from 1.2.10 to current are compatible so you have a wide selection available to you...
RTS camera - a must have.
Diplomacy - a must have
Adjustable leveling - Comes handy for leveling companions
Troop Formations - Can be a little finicky but I'd say it's worth having.
Dismemberment (Plus) - Nothing'll make you happier than seeing heads roll!
Character Reload - Extremely finicky and has a tendency to crash your game but for the most part can be a helpful tool. I'd grab this if you wish to experiment.
There are plenty more mods beyond that... but like I said, play the game vanilla first and then go find mods to improve upon your initial impression. (If that makes any sense?!)
Other mods that I think are great: Xorberax's Legacy, Diplomacy, Tournaments XPanded. I like Better Smithing Continued as well for the removal of stamina but that might be a bit unbalanced considering how lucrative smithing can be.
