Do captain perks work in the players party?
Do captain perks only work when the player is specifically chosen as captain or do they now also apply when you are the sole commander of your party? Is there any way to know when the effect is active in battle? Please only respond if you are certain because there seems to be a lot of misinformation out there on this topic.

“Formation bonuses” from perks of the characters apply only if he/she is appointed as the commander of a specific formation in a joint battle. Companions’ perks, on the other hand, affect that specific companion’s appointed formation.

How then would I appoint the main character as the commander of a specific formation? If that is not doable, then it would appear that captain perks are not applicable to the main character, at this time.

As far as I know you can only do that if you are part of a army (but not lead it yourselfe I think), that's the only situation i know of at which the player can take command of a specific formation.

no.... if you join with your party a great army and lead a part (infantry, range, ... ),
i would assume u are a "captain".

Thank you, that at least clears up the role the player can play as captain.

From what I understand so far this is correct. You are captain when you specifically get the option to pick a formation, otherwise you are the 'army/party leader', not a captain. Matching a companion to a formation will make them captain of that formation.

No player is dumb enough to join another lords army. So yes for the most part captain perks are useless for the player. Leave them for companions.

I join armies all the time, easy influence good way to make noble friends and level up my troops and I can take a mental break from micro managing everything for awhile while I ride along. Sometimes we get in bad situations but such is life in a world with constant war

When you are in an army at the start there is the list of all the formations and you click which one you want to lead

What? I do when I a merc. I like that they have control. once you start your own kingdom all that goes away. so I like to play around with it abit.

dont get me wrong if I see a larger army is headed our way, I bail. I am just a merc after all ;)

What happens if you have multiple companions in the same formation? will they all be captains, and things stack, or only 1, and if so how is it decided who?

What part is false? It is true that the player is not captain in most situations you fight in.
