With the character manager on Nexus, you can import/export character information. It uses custom console command to import and export character information to a text file, which you can easily edit in notepad the info and import it back over a character.
Not only can you rename companions, but you can make character presets, change their looks/gender, create custom biographies, setup what your player owns like castles and towns.
I used the mod to make my own RP Battanian/Celtic characters/clan within the game. Like a Robinhood inspired party leader, a Battanian druid companion that runs my capital, witch/mystic inspired caravan companions, a Nimue/Lady of the Lake inspired clan leader based out of Dunglanys that's creating a Celtic Arthurian Legend like movement. :)
The only thing I would suggest is to make sure if you go crazy with it, to always check whether the "is companion" is checked correctly for the character you're editing, if your use player characters to create custom companion presets. Not sure it it matters after they're recruited, but just to be safe.
To import and override a character, the text file's filename has to be exactly the same, case sensitive within quotes (like "John the Brave"). To change it to Joe the Brave, go into the text file and change the name within it, but not the filename. On import their name will be Joe the Brave.
When making a character preset from a player character it's very similar, but I rename the text file to match the companion's name. Then check the option to make it a companion if it was checked beforehand in the original data. I always export the original companion/lord data to make sure, since I think after testing lords don't have the companion tag checked.
Save the custom file over the original text file, then import it into the game to override the character's old data.
