Workshops, broken or just useless?
Basically title. Idk if I'm doing something horrifically wrong or if workshops are just a waste of money but I cannot get them to produce anything worth a damn. I have swapped out one of my workshops to literally every single type that there is and none of them have lasted very long making money. The only time it really makes any money is if I stop by and drop resources in the warehouse for it but... I don't want to do that. The whole point of the damn workshop is to have an autonomous method of earning income, right?

I've tried workshops in multiple towns in the Sturgian region early-mid game during multiple playthroughs, and that was indeed my experience, constantly at 0 profit.

I sold them, and bought up workshops in Battanian towns, making sure there is no 2 of the same type in a town (and preferably no other in a nearby town). These towns also grown considerably in wealth by end-game as there were no wars and food shortages in their vicinity.
By now the 7 workshops made like 3500 money/day.
I sometimes filled the warehouses, but it was rare.

10/10 would not recommend investing in Sturgia.

workshops really aren't worth it. Not the investment, not the risk and not the revenue. It is not even fun owning them, it's just boring. I've never understood why people bought that crap.

ive had workshops do fine in empire areas but my experience with sturgia is similar with 0 income

Workshops print money if you set them up correctly. You can recoup your initial investment in 1-2 in game years. This topic comes up fairly often, so I'll direct you to a helpful person that made this post a while back. YMMV.

I believe if you focus on them like leveling trade and stuff and micro manage them you might have some profit but unless you are not focusing your gameplay on profit, basically defeating some parties and looting them will grant you more profit than a workshop will ever provide

While some workshop are in fact broken, they generally rate their profit based on a towns prosperity level. Which is why workshops in sturgia generally suck because all their towns start out poor as ♥♥♥♥. Some perks affect workshops also. I havent confirmed this but I think your tradeskill also affects it.

In my current game my best performing workshop was at battanias dunglese or whatever with a wine workshop and with all the perks (but with almost no tradeskill) it yields on average 400-600 per day, the town prosperity is over 9000.

This is in beta 1.23

Also, with a buying price of like 30,000 gold, this means this workshop pays for itself in aprox 60 days.

You can manage such numbers even with prosperty lower with wineries, because world wide there is quite few of them, and a lot of grapes and wineries is centred to Battania.

Yeah it gets lots of grapes from the villages, but Im quite certain the town prosperity is a big factor. Its not the first time ive gotten this worskhop, and it has produced garbage profits before when the town was devastated by wars. In my current game its never been attacked so its prsperity had a chance to grow

Smiths need to be given material, especially in Sturgia. They just don't gather anything to make profits themselves.

But if you take all the weapons you gather fighting wars and smelt them all down, then pass them to the smiths, they'll make thousand+ a day. And I build up hundreds upon hundreds of iron and steel just melting down junk, so they can keep going for a long time.

Are you putting these in the warehouse or just on the market, because caravans will come buy the cheap goods if its on the market. Also do you have a screenshot of this, and is your game umodded?

I use the wealthy workshop mod on the steam workshop, configured it so that it's fair, and haven't had any problems.

By far the most common reason why a workshop won't work is that they determine it's unprofitable to do so. And they make this determination at least primarily based on the price of the finished product.

In other words, if your workshop is not producing anything, it's because there's too much of whatever they're producing sitting in the market.

In the 1.23 beta. I got one case on video in my bug report over in tech forum. People need to stop assuming that others are dumb and dont understand how workshops work. They actually are broken.
