Your allies cannot hit you. If you have a shield it can stick into that, but if you don't it will not affect you in any way. Just imagine how much friendly fire you would of taken if friendly archers could hit you... it would be alot.
This just happened a few hours ago. Never noticed it before 1.5.7
So the answer is yes.
reading helps....
(hint: *your* troops)
jk :)
Shield on your back does help to mitigate damage received when you get hit from behind but not completely block it as if you held that shield in your hand. I guess it was made that way for balance reasons.
Your arty can kill your own troops well enough.
Had one siege where they still were shooting as my troops went on the walls. While i have to admit that they are pretty effective at killing, its a lot less fun if its a dozend of yours going down in a single shot.
Although that was serval patches ago.
The only friendly fire your troops can receive is either from you as the Player Character, or alternative *face palm* your own seige engines... I had my own oniger do a direct hit on my own siege tower once and kill 60 legionaries *escape, main menu, load game*.
Just recently my own Trebuchet decided to fire at our Siege Tower, destroying it and all the units on it. A quarter of my force was gone in the blink of an eye.
Needless to say, the guy who fired did not survive the day.
I use the one step down, the "Large heater shield" or whatever it's called that costs 57k denars due to it's increased coverage area (it's only 10 HP less than the steel round shield).
And since I mentioned it, shield area does indeed work, so larger shields do indeed protect you better. That's why I gave my brother the pavise shield for his back, you can't even see him around that shield.
(the shield has protected you from behind since at least 1.5.5 That I know of or even earlier, they didn't add all the new damage dialog to the mini console until 1.5.7 and 1.5.8. So it has always been there, it just didn't tell you.)
This is false, shield on your back does help you. If you pay attention to log, you will see shield on the back hit messages now and then. Try attacking archers then running directly away from them and you will see this happening. Obviously, larger the shield, more likely it is going to happen. I use wicker shield because it is largest area shield in the game.
However, considering how ineffective the armor against arrows, the fact that shields are very effective balances out.
