For me I had to have some time pass after recruiting them to get the option.

Wish you could see stats BEFORE you recruit.

You can, right click their portrait from the tavern screen.

Nope. They just wonder off, not kicked from the clan.

1.8.0 never used a mod. This is how it works for me;

If the companion is in your party, be on the campaign map. When not in a town click Party (P), then left click on the companion. This shows the chat icon, click it, then select. about your position in the clan > I no longer need your services.

If they are not in your party, recall them via the new mechanic on the Clan (L) screen.

Initiate chat then follow the text tree. The last screen is where you choose the reason you are dismissing them.

Its weird. I can't seem to get those options unless I'm outside of a town.

I also need to be on the campaign map for it to work. I edited it just before you posted to clarify that. I never need to talk to them in towns as a I never interact with criminals/gangs nor do any missions from towns folk.

haha, ok. Yeah originally I thought some time had to pass, but I was wrong about that. I just have to leave the town first.

Save game, recruit, look at stats, if you don't like them, reload.

my concern isn't the money, just seems like a lot of unnecessary steps just to see if I even want them as a companion. Especially since the majority of the time I don't.

Each Companion "title" like "the hawk" or "the surgeon" has a specific stat list.

Right clicking their portrait will not tell you how many points they have in each, but it honestly doesn't matter because the only difference is what the name is. I forget what I usually go for but one of them has high number of icons including leadership and when I see those guys I pick them up because they have a massive amount of overall stats compared to the rest.

Maybe I should just get that mod that lets you have companions that start at level 1. I always get to their stat page and see a terrible dustribution that looks like a dead end character.
