PSA: Bannerpaste works, but your custom banner may crash the game
As of 1.6.1, Bannerpaste v1 seems to still work as advertised. However, if you use a banner with more than one shape on it (incl. two or three), the game will crash as soon as you try opening your inventory. I believe I've excluded all other factors.

Any colors, custom backgrounds (e.g. the swirly thing used by bandits) and using the "stroke" feature all seem to be safe.

What's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ about this is that we're now more restricted in our options than the NPC clan banners.

I'm not sure if i'm understanding the specifics of your issue (I'm tired, sorry) but bannerpaste hasn't been updated since the reversal of colours option was enabled in vanilla.
The good news is the Order of Battle system is just around the corner and its linked to a redone custom banner feature (last I heard).

Or have I got it all wrong?

You're correct, except for maybe the feature is about banners carried by troops (a vanilla Bear My Banner), not the banner editor. However, since Bannerpaste is ostensibly linked to a simple toggle in the code, it's fairly update-proof - so I noted the statements of other players in Nexus comments and went in.

A Bannerpaste problem should trigger crashes a lot earlier than entering the inventory, no?

I've updated the OP with the results of my testing. Hopefully the devs will notice the thread on Monday.

Why wait for dev to fix it? you would have to wait few years then,

Would've been helpful if the note wasn't stuck way at the bottom of the description :steammocking: For some reason I also ignored that mod back in 1.5.5.
