Reason for storing prisoners in Castle?
I know keeping lords in prison gives you some time where they can't be causing problems for your faction, but what about imprisoning ordinary rank and file?

Do they slowly convert to garrison or is there no purpose other than storage of people that I guess you could use to convert later on if you want?

I dump the regular units there until I can sort them out and decide who gets ransomed and who I I want to keep and convert.

For example, if I take a town and capture a ton of militia, I'll put them in my party until I can recruit them and put them in the garrison. Militia are easy to convert and they don't cost anything to maintain.

I usually ransom the high tier units, unless they are some worth recruiting, like fians.

Don't militia cost if you put them in the garrison? Since they will just be classed as a normal troop.

Right, I guess if you have a lot of prisoners you can use it as a hold to convert them in batches.

Was just wondering if it happened automatically, but I guess not.

Probably. I was just kind of assuming, and you know what that does. I just keep them because even if in the garrison, they are cheap.

One of the perks gives construction bonus for every 3 prisoners. If you have a governor with that perk, you can boost your fief construction speed.

Militia represents fief inhabitants' garrison, it's virtual with free upkeep. One of the perks gives them a chance to spawn as an "improved" unit in sieges.

You get them sometimes as prisoners, they are worse than regulars, and IMO not worth the "regular" upkeep unless you are in a pinch.

One thing I would do in midgame was to store all bandits captured in dungeons, only so when I stumbled upon "Manual laborers" sidequest I could sell them instantly for quick cash and reputation.

Dungeons are mainly for prisoner management, carrying too many prisoners can slow your down and increase the odds of them running away, so having a place where you can store prisoners for later use is important.

Basically its to free up space in your party prisoner limit and simply storage in the mean time, characters dont even heal in the prison for some reason. There are some slight differences in escape chance and other obscure things based on governer and party leader bonuses.

Thats it.

Everything else people are posting is "What do I want to do" and "Slight differences in events like if a city is captured instead of staying in my party" which everyone can figure out for themselves and isnt really a difference of mechanics.

Cheers, yeah that's all it was. Some game mechanics aren't as obvious as others so I was wondering if it was beneficial to store prisoners, but if they don't convert to garrison, then just time for a cash conversion. I like to keep my armies fairly homogeneous, only using troops from the culture I chose. So I've no use for captured enemies other than to sell or to use in garrison.
