They honestly arent the same genre of games.
Total War is total war, which you are familiar with is more similar to traditional RTS games but in its own style that you already know wherein you command armies and manage cities from a top-down approach.
Whereas bannerlord and warband are more like action games with some rpg elements. Basically you have your own character wondering around the world doing things yourself such as fighting land battles and sieges. You recruit troops from villages and towns and you'd level them up manually by getting exp from fights. You fight the battles yourself in 3rd person or 1st person as you, your character. You forge alliances, barter with other lords, talk to people, pledge to lieges, recruit troops etc. all actions in the same way. As you yourself, as your character.
The only RTS-esque feature of this game is that you can manually command troops from your own character's perspective during battles. You dont go up from a top-down view and left click troops and right click on a part of the map to move them. You'd have to manually give them commands from your own character and point where you wish them to go, to charge, hold fire, etc.
Its more like an action-adventure-rpg with strategy elements mix bag.
You should watch at least 10mins of gameplay on Youtube I guess to be more familiar with it.
I also come from total war, the first time I heard the sound of a cavalry charge in this game I wanted to get up and applaud.
I don't want to say that one is better than the other, as rightly said, they are 2 games quite different (although I admit, I knew the game because a friend of mine advised me bannerlord because "similar" to total war).
Many of my friends who loved TW, enjoyed this series to.
Not even close.
Total War games are trash compared to this because M&B games bring you right up close and personal with the battlefield.
Total War battles are like watching a bunch of ants swarming a hill. Not to mention that Creative Assembly spams that game. If you've seen one, you've seen them all. I think they are working on their 16th Total War game. Bloody ridiculous. Why anybody would buy them anymore is beyond me.
Then they go out and buy MnB because it provides that experience up to 1000 units per battle instance (maybe the number will be even higher down the road).
Just don't go in here expecting any type of strategic gameplay the way you would in a TBS or RTS.
