Recruiting units from towns and settlements
Is it just me or has recruiting units been nerfed since patch 1.3? Like all the cities and settlements just have peasants available to recruit in the first 3-4 slots. It is almost impossible to find tier 3-5 troops now.

This is not the first time I heard of this issue, so I am assuming this must be the result of some balancing of this mechanic in that patch onwards that reset villages to an early game state where the player only has access to lower tier troops. It's possible that the village notables will eventually provide higher quality units over time, but I haven't checked this myself.

I have also heard that some villages that once provided elite units (fians, banner knights, etc) are no longer doing so or have moved to other villages.
i wish i could get pesants from towns they dont cost anything to keep, its all recruits.

The recruitment pool of villages/towns changes with each new game. At the same time its defined at the game start what tier you can recruit. Only noble's can have real high tier units (I'm not 100% sure about this one).

So basically its rng, one game you might be lucky and your faction/area has many high tier spawns which replenish all the time and the next game you can almost only recruit tier1 units...

This is not in a new game. I am tier 5 clan nearly tier 6. The game is very well progressed with only three factions left.

Like he says, I've seen people with games that have gone on for decades that are experiencing this change, so while existing games are probably screwed over by this change and it may take many in game years to return to normalcy, I am assuming new games will be unhindered by this issue and players will have access to the higher tier units when the right parameters are met.

Since 1.3? I have not played 1.4 but in 1.3 I could still find upgraded troops, it just took some traveling around. I believe that leaders in cities/villages with a certain trait or descriptor have a higher chance of spawning noble/upgraded troops, although I have not found an exact rule for that. But I do notice that some villages in a playthrough consistantly provide better troops so I tend to note those down and mainly visit them.

I don't think Tier 5 units are available without mods (not even in 1.2).

The units are more likely to be higher tier units IF the notable has greater influence (regular[1] < influential[100] < powerful [200]), if the location is more prosperous (prosperity/hearths). Additionally, only certain notables will spawn the noble units (the ones that can have tier 6). I'm not exactly certain as to the rules for this one, but those notables will always spawn the noble units.

Specifically, "powerful" notables (influence > 200) will spawn noble troop lines. I think anything above "regular" (meaning over 50 influence) has a geometrically increased chance to spawn a higher tier of a basic troop line recruit

Regular is 0-99.
Influential is 100-199.
Powerful is 200+ (I don't believe there is anything above this because I've seen a notable with >550 and it was still Powerful)

Influence only affects the tier of the troop. Noble troops are only spawned by specific notables (I'm not certain if "Powerful" is also a requirement).

I was absolutely certain that anybody with influence over 200 can get them.

I have only played on patches 1.2 and 1.4, but so far as I have seen, only certain notables will have the "noble" recruits. For instance, in my current playthrough, I own both Danustica and Vostrum (so I'm there quite often) and all of the notables there are "Powerful". However, I have never seen a single noble unit (Imperial Vigla/Equite/Heavy Horseman) being available to recruit. Instead, the same one notable of the three available notables at Polisia will only spawn Vigla/Equite/Horseman troops (he is "Powerful" as well though, so that may be one of the requirements to spawn noble troops).

Yeah, I'm solid "powerful" is a must for noble troops aside from their general availability. Basically, better fail that "Family Feud" quest than do it against one of the noble-recruit notables.

If you have enough charm, you can afford to do the quests since your relation gains will always outpace your relation decreases. Just make sure you're doing quests for everybody instead of just one side.

An older game might well have had much more village burning and subsequent notables lose influence meaning lesser recruits. Protect your villages at all costs. I've also wondered if time spent idle for recruits in the recruitment slot and resources can increase troop tier.
