Is there a way to force units to use their polearms?
I'm starting to get pretty irritated with my troops. They often seem to prefer their sidearms, making certain formations far less useful than they should be.

Nope. They only use them when cav is near.

Considering polearms are pretty much poop in melee, only when cavalry are around. Feel fortunate that they don't just use polearms all day long, otherwise they'd just get owned in melee.

They are not supposed to melee with a spear.

They should though. Polearms were the kings of the medieval battlefield. The fact that my troops ignore the weapon that would give them a major reach advantage and allow several of them to attack the same enemy without breaking formation to get closer is stupid.

Yes , but in this game, they are not. Not yet , atleast. As the weapons can't be used "effectively" because they collide with the troops behind / near them.

Spearwall should be a formation.

Spears were on battlefields since ancient history - Macedon, Greek states, Roman pilum etc, German tribes , etc. and in medieval they were widely used, by english, scotish, french, polish , hungarian, italian, eastern, vikings etc. knights, mercenaries and battle mobs.
