Its worth now having palatine guards instead of Sergeant crossbows?
Now they only have 1 stack of 24 arrows, no shield, but decent armour (the only thing they have tbh). The crossbows On the other part, 20 bolts but with shield to act like a melee soldier. At least other archers have 2 stacks of arrows to keep firing to almost all the battle... is kinda sad having a good looking archer and not even having a shield to keep it alive or something.

just get the "promote to noble troops" mod and farm battanian fians champions for archers, they wipe the floor compared to other archers.

xbows aren't worth it at the current level, their piercing damage is negligble since they have lower range and accuracy compared to high level archers, that also have more ammo before running out

I use both.

Thankfully, most battles in Bannerlord are over in about five minutes... If you control your Palantines by issuing cease-fire orders you can maximize their effectiveness. Archery fire is best when it's "massed" anyway, so if you put them on hold until the enemy is in range, they'll usually do just fine against ground troops.

Against mounted or HA, you may have to order several cease-fires until you can get the situation in hand. A circle formation when against HA and having a mix of crossbows/palantine works fairly well. Under hold fire orders, the crossbows will have their shields ready.

I mix the Crossbows in for some extra protection from mounted units that happen to flank the archers and that don't get downed before they get there.

The Palantine archers have excellent armor, btw. They're decent light swordsmen in a pinch, too. They're definitely not a top or mid-tier melee unit, but they can handle the rabble if they have to.

Talking about archers, for now, the best working army until date was a "full archer" army, following:
-Horse archers as the frontline. Just command charge and let them spend all their ammo.
-Archers and crossbows. Just a bunch of archers makes good things.

Horse archers just make their melee infantry walking around like a headless chicken, giving free shots from my arrows. Thats why i love fighting vs battanian armies.
