Companion Bug
So I recently started playing this again and I've noticed something that is happening so often that I can't ignore it anymore.

My companions won't come to me. Like, if I assign a companion to be a caravan leader and they get defeated and captured. Once free and at a town, they refuse to come to me when summoned. I don't even get the option.

This is happening to what feels like every companion as it's happened several times in a row. To specify, the game is completely unmodded. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I had this weird bug in my previous game.

However, I could not summon them at all, the recall button in the clan screen was blacked out. To remedy this, I had to travel to the same town they were staying at, then the recall button worked.

nobody in my clan will take any remote orders right now. I just got a castle and wanted to assign someone as govenor. they're a party leader so I tried to change leaders on that party and every member of my clan is greyed out and says "is not available right now". I can't even assign companions that are in my current party as govenor... everyone is unavailable apparently for everything. same for trying to summon people to my party like the previous posts in this thread. button is greyed out and mouse-over says that person is unavailble

I've seen posts here of people saying that leaving a clan member in a fief (use the + button in the upper right when in a fief) and then take them back.

I'm getting the same problem. I can get the companion back ... but only I travel in person to the town & collect them back from it. It's not possible to summon them to the party :(

You need to leave them in the fief, and then leave the fief, and re-enter, Then you can pick them up. What happens is their captive flag isn't cleared when they escape, so game think they still captive, thus can't be assigned.

I have the same bug. I can't recall two companions who have escaped from captivity and are now staying in separate cities far from my party. The "leave them in a fief" solution is erroneous because you cannot leave someone in a fief who is not in your party. It might clear the captive flag, but you still have to march across the map to pick them up from the tavern in the city they are staying in to get them in your party first. Hope this bug is fixed soon because it is a real killer when you're fighting on more than one flank and have to spend two days picking up companions who should be able to return on their own, as they could in previous patches.

"previous patches" became the answer for 2 of us. in the game's properties in the steam library we went to the betas drop menu and rolled our games back to last december's 1.2.8 and for now have just locked it in there. game was unplayable with my whole clan becoming unavailable to me. I have no idea what the risks are to rolling back a save from newer versions to older ones but it worked out fine for the 2 of us and our games carry on. Hope this helps

There are still things you can do with such companions without traveling to their location.

1) You can delegate them as governors of any fief your clan holds (even if just temporarily, so they travel closer to you).

2) You can ask them to lead a party and then call the party to your army.
Monkeyhorse Aug 28, 2024 @ 12:52am
TruXurT this is not the case. I cannot make them governors because they are still tagged as captives. I have tried this to get them closer and it does not work for escaped companions. It may work for escaped family members, I am not sure.

TruXurT you are correct about asking them to lead a party, so this may be my way out. I can disband existing small parties, with that leader going to a nearby town, and have the faraway leader form a new party. Far from ideal, but more workable than travelling to pick up the escaped captive.

Small mod returns companions when they are released.
(I didn't make it, but it solves these problems)

Thanks Zudukas - I've not tried mods yet.

You will have to ask yourself which is worse -- the problems that the mod fixes or the problems that the mod will inevitably cause.

I've never ran into an issue with little mods like that, as long as the versions of the game and the mod match. Bigger mods that change a bunch of stuff, sure, sometimes they are buggy messes when you're using a ton of them and don't pay attention to load order. Worst thing that will happen is your game crashes and you have to remove it. I believe that particular mod can be added into an on-going game as it doesn't actually do anything with your save file.
