Everyone has an opinion. Personally I do not think naming your characters is kludgy? or breaks my experience. If I have a child and it is taught to be a captain of a formation, it makes sense they would be called thus. Example, I raise/train a child named Svelta to be a cavalry captain. I name her Svelta the Captain. This identifies her role at a glance and is in line with existing wanderer names.
Likewise, I always make my spouse Captain of the archer formation. If my spouse is named Corein, when she assumes the role (immediately upon marriage) I name her Corein the Archer.
If I raise a child to be a front line infantry captain and they use a shield I will name her XXX the Shieldmaiden as an example.
This all fits perfectly with some existing npc names and shows at a glance, even in battle, what the role is. Having to consult an in game notepad would annoy me.
