Cavalry won't dismount.
I'm trying to tell my cavalry to dismount, and they get stuck in this endless mount/dismount cycle.

Is anyone else having this issue?

A friend told me about this a while back. He got so annoyed he just killed their horses.

I never tried to dismount the cavalry tbh...

What´s that good for in the game? The only unit i could imagine to dismount would be khan´s guards, when i wanted to play defensive with them. But if i had Khans´guards they would probably also destroy everything mounted, while they get hit less often when being mounted, as the infantry is too slow to react to the cavalry, and archers usually only hit them either by mistake, or when they ride towards or away from them in a straight line (and they actually aim at them)

Village battles and bridge defense.

Cavalry get stuck on the village terrain, and bridge defense should be self-explanatory.

Also, the top tier Sturgian Cavalry is more effective on foot than on horseback.

I played a campaign with vlandia recently and their AI lords bring too much cav. Not a big issue for most battles, but in larger battles vs sturgians i dismounted most of the cav and merged the knights into the infantry shieldwall since sturgians love their shieldwall and a large cav force is pretty useless against it.
Is it a spacing issue? Does having the widest formation improve the issue?

Hmm - i recently played Sturgia, and i simply didn´t use the cavalry in village or bridge fights, because on a bridge the spearmen would hold it on their own, and in villages it´s oftentimes not needed. I would set the cavalry to charge if the enemy is fleeing. And again in bridge battles - if You´re in offense, the AI would go back to the furthest corner of the map instead of defending the bridge, so one has all the time in the world to bring the party or army to the other side.

In any way cavalry is more effective on a horse, because the infantry is too slow to react to them, and the infantry will also spread out instead of standing close together, which would be the way to defeat cavalry. And i don´t think that any cavalry in the game is more effective when they´re dismounted. The Sturgian one probably are okay when dismounted, but they will have more kills and lose less people when they´re mounted. They´re like the second best armored unit in the game - speaking of armor value, and they have decent weapon options.

I'd rather not have 40-50 elite cavalry units sit out situations where infantry is objectively superior just because the feature is broken.

Only in sieges... I mean they dont have collision either so it doesnt really surprise me. The reason those Elite cavalry are at times useless in field battles is because a line of peasants will stop them.
