Serve as a soldier mod, how does it work?

I just downloaded it and thought it looked pretty interesting, but I'm not quite sure how it works. I start off the same as every game, but do I have to actively seek out lords to join their warband? I thought I could go to a castle and enlist? Can someone explain the specifications for how the mod works, please?

I think for sandbox it is just another fun way to rise up the ranks. And it's fun to just be a literal nobody. Just another soldier in a army.
