Thanks, I'll give this a shot. I can't believe I can't find ANY videos on YouTube about this feature or even a good playthrough of 1.7.0
If you struggle to keep companions in the same group. Make sure they got a horse and a bow each, they should all appear in a mixed cav/horse archer group if you make one.
I was able to get them sorted by using the sliders, but not really sure how I did it. I think I put them as mixed into another unused group (using drop-downs) then went back to individual groups and added the specific units back in using sliders.
The solution is to disband these two groups when in the planning phase before an attack and then assign them again. It's still annoying though.
