Some low level cavalry goes straight to war mounts because they already start with a mount. Empire Cavalry takes a regular mount and a war mount because they start with neither.
Im trying to figure out if this is a mod (which doesn't really make sense) or a change to the game (which also doesn't really make sense). the only mod im using is the bloodlust mod, which has nothing to do with this ostensibly
If you cannot use horses that you can ride in your troop upgrades, it sounds like you've got some mod wonkiness happening.
Not true. Please do not spread disinformation. This is hard enough for people to grasp without someone feeding them ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Main character and clan members can ride sumpters, work horses and mules. These are all Tier 0 Mounts, which can be ridden by main character and clan members, but which cannot be used to upgrade troops. Other Tier 0 include Work Horse, Saddle Horse, and Pack Camels.
Troops who require a Mount for upgrade have to have Tier 1 Mounts, such as Midlands Palfrey, Nahasawi, Rouncy, Battanian Hobby, Hunter and Sturgian Native. These will be labelled Mount Type Mount.
Troops who require a War Horse require either T2 or T3 Mounts such as Steppe Hunter, Darshi Horse, Charger, Revyl Chaser. Canterion Charger, etc. These will be labelled Mount Type War Mount.
T4 Mounts are Mount Type Noble Mount. Main and clan members can ride them if their Riding is high enough, but they will not be used for upgrades.
I just verified all of this in current mainline 1.2.9 with no mods.
As near as I can tell, all those T1 Mounts are pretty much interchangeable, with no discernible difference in performance.
Same with T2/T3 War Mounts.
But there could be a difference. I just don't know because that's not something I cared enough about to pay attention to.
