How does "Face direction" command work?

Hello.

So the game has a "Face direction" command (F2 + F1) but does anybody know how it actually works? Right now it just seems like my soldiers are facing a random direction and there is nothing that I've tried that can change that direction.

The face direction command is really important. Otherwise my entire army is running around like confused chickens because of 3 horse archers behind us whilst we're being attacked by the main army from infront.

You just look in the direction you want them to face and click. You'll see a small arrow pointing in the direction. Dragging and dropping your troop movement orders left to right will have them face "forward" but if you drag right to left, they'll face "backwards" like in Total War games, so you use this command to make them turn back the right way.

It is also useful if you want to set up bottlenecks and crossfires by splitting up your archery groups and making them only look in a certain direction but the opportunities for pulling this kind of stuff off is pretty rare at the moment, I've only been able to do it once during a bandit raid.

Essentially you move your troops to the position you want them in, and then activate the command, and then pay attention to the little blue banner and the green arrow pointing at it. This is exactly where your men will turn to face. It's very easy to use once you get the hang of it.

You're basically putting a flag for them to stare at on the ground. F2 the option comes up, press F1 to place the flag, and they will face that specific spot. Troopers will still turn on the spot to face the enemy behind them if they can, but the entire formation will face the direction you set.
