Where do I get the heavier armor? Chain and lamellar.
Like the stuff that is available in multiplayer. I've been to about every town in the game, but it's just leather lamellar with no mail or padding armor everywhere.

Lamellar is Empire stuff mostly, get it from tourneys, their shops (possibly requires player level to be high or maybe renown, not sure) or from looting their armies, especially from big armies with notable lords in them with high levels of Roguery.

Same for chain, that's Vlandian for the most part. Plated visored / full helmets, plated mail boots and gloves, tabards over mail main armour, that sort of thing. Same methods as above for acquiring it.

If you mean stuff like this anyway:

That's pretty much 100% Vlandian equipment, I think anyway. Except for the shoulders which I found after a battle against an Empire faction. The boots are Lamellar too, actually. It's possible some of it might be universal though, found in Sturgian and Battanian lands as well, since I've spent a lot of my time there too.

Early game I only found nice gear from battles, but now I've levelled up a lot and taken over Vlandia, I'm finding their top gear in the town shops a lot. I'm not sure, it might be tied to the prosperity of the location too - Vlandian lands haven't seen a war for at least 150+ days now, they're all pushing 7500+ prosperity.

Appearance in shops is probably player level, clan tier, renown or prosperity based - maybe even a combination of all of those? I know I found nothing but garbage in the early game anyway.

Yeah it takes a while to show up but Empire generally has the lameller over chain eventually.

Do you know what it is based on? Player level, player clan tier, overall world prosperity, or just over time? Or is it entirely random?

Would be nice to know if there's something I need to do to find good equipment. I've also noticed looter and bandit parties growing in size, they've gone from like 8 sized groups to 30+ strong, I've even seen a 117 sized group at one point. It's gotta be tied to some kind of progression, right?

Like I remember in Warband if you went above level 65 or something, suddenly villages would be infested with groups of a million bandits and stuff, due to progression ramping up based on your character level or something like that.

Idk what that first guy who responded is talking about, you'll never get lamellar torso armor (which I assume is what you want) in tournaments. It shows up in the more prosperous imperial towns very late in the game, around day 600-800. Before that, around mid game you'll see 30+ armor chain shirts of various styles show up.

Some people say it's based on clan tier, but I hit tier 6 pretty early in my latest campaign and it still didn't show up until very late. Also worth noting that it's insanely expensive. That 48/16/16 lamellar with scale skirt or whatever it's called costs like 1.2 million gold.

Apparantly there was an error with high gear beeing not having the right production rate in cities that's why ironmonger workshops rather produce the cheap stuff. They have changed that in the current beta-branch. So the likelyhood to find the real good stuff is still their but pretty rare in the current version. This should be fixed when the beta-patch is going out of beta by the end of the week or early next week.

Thanks for that. I've never got to 600-800 so that might explain the absence of certain armours. The mid game +30 chains is the most I've seen.

Just a tip, if you really want heavy armor without having to wait a gazillion years, just marry an imperial noblewoman with decent stuff. Most of the female imperial lords spawn with one of the three lamellar suits along with a 50 or 58 armor helmet. After you marry just disband her party, add her to yours and steal her gear.

Shops can now (atleast in beta) pop up high level gear even at the start, but it is rare.

Oh, I thought I found a really decent plate helmet from a tournament early on, it wasn't the full closed one but it was almost identical in stats. I don't know where my shoulders came from but I thought it was from a tournament, like the helmet I used to have. Guess not.

I've seen shoulders of various other factions up for prizes in tournaments everywhere else (like brass ones, armour bearskins, etc) that I figured shoulders and mantles were a very common prize. Whoops!

Didn't mean to imply you can find all the armour from tournaments either, was just poorly worded on my part. Was more of a minced list of places I thought I'd seen good high tier armours, not just Empire stuff. Bweh.

You can get mid tier helmets, but not torso armor. There's a price cap on tournament rewards and torso armor is absurdly expensive.

Supposedly blacksmith workshops should produce both weapons and armor much faster than cities by themselves do but there are a few unknowns in there like how fast is it, is everything produced equally or is it random and is it even 'active' in the game now?

In my current game Im planning on getting as many workshops in a city as I can and turn them into blacksmits to see if it helps because another unknown is if they stack to produce stuff faster or do they produce their own separate items?

So depending on how it works or if it even works there could be anything from they only produce one item at a time and its random so you could end up with a dozen and two tier 2 weapons before any kind of high tier armor is made.. and perhaps it takes 200 days to make a high tier armor when/if it ever gets started, afaik no one knows.

I've seen torso armour though. Not mail or lamellar, but definitely scale and some kind of ringed armour possibly from Sturgia or Battania, really can't remember.

Definitely a lot of the armour I've been given from tourneys has been helmets or shoulders, though. Visored helmets in Vlandia which are fairly good, and some kind of brass shoulders once from somewhere, too.

I haven't spent enough time in Empire lands to really know what you can get from tournaments anyway, but you can find some pieces of the heavier armour from Vlandian tournaments, etc. Maybe just the helm, possibly some splint boots, not sure. It's been a while since I've done one to know and they have been changed since then - I don't believe you can get a Rhomphalia from Battanian tourneys anymore either, right?

But anyway, I didn't mean to imply tournaments give you everything. Was just pointing out a potential place where you can get some of the decent high tier armour as well, etc.

You can get some great armor by marrying a lord and taking his stuff

^-- This.

In typical Warband play, better gear gets unlocked on a leveled basis. I would think it's a player-character level requirement for it to be unlocked. I think I got it at 10/11?

You might be able to get it early as a drop or as a tournament reward.
