Isn't that more immersive?
And if they have done this they are surely thinking of a repair system (smithy is already there waiting)
or as someone said above tiered items like borderlands/warband had.
I'm all for more depth to the systems - if they let us improve gear quality, then this opens us options to gear more cheaply. However, I'm only finding the broken gear in battle, not in shops, so the fact it's damaged is only a downside right now.
It would go a long way to reducing the weird equipment bleedout that has been going on. My Rhomphalia was worth 3000 or something a while ago, now I can trade it and a Falx together for a whole town to another lord because it's so expensive, what?
If a player wants to use a certain weapon, they won't be locked out until late game if you could find rusty versions of it. Rusty Rhomphalia found around, worth like 2000 denars. Compared to the Masterwork Rhomphalia which is like +50% better in every way, but worth like 100,000 denars. With many tiers of quality between that, which not only adds a form of progression for the player but also allows them to get early crappier versions to use with the same moveset but reduced performance, at an affordable early game price.
It also gives you something to work towards, like Warband where you'd eventually get yourself a full set of Lordly Plate and become the ultimate tank.
Would be excellent if Smithing perks allowed you to "refurbish" weapons looted from the field too, which would make Smithing companions desirable too. I.E a certain perk that essentially raises the quality of low tier weapons (Broken, Defective, Rusty, Bent, Chipped, Cracked, etc) into a chance of being a basic version instead, after a big battle?
Maybe in the form of just a general passive based on you / your companions / your entire parties Smithing skill instead of requiring actual perks. I.E until you get that Smithing skill up enough to salvage battlefield loot, expect to find nothing but junk?
What version are you playing? I just fought a battle with over 500 units, and only got 7400 for everything, and a previous battle against about 100 units yielded about 3k. This is excluding the value of ransoming units.
Some affect just value, some small stat changes.
I think it is fine, ♥♥♥♥ gets damaged in combat and in use.
You still get good value out of the loot.

it of course breaks balance but you can setup percentage chance for items drop in config.
