That's how it was done in the mods that taleworlds used for inspiration.
Mercs cause trouble... that's why they're mercs. Seems reasonable to me?
I'm quite sure that one of us has no idea what a mercenary is, and it isn't me.
A mercenary is a solider for hire. They fight for money. Typically, they have traditional military training but then either through opportunistic self-interest, or a lack of other options (ie being unwelcome in any military), they hire themselves out.
If you stop and think about it for one second, the whole thing just gets darker and darker. Imagine being told to go out and murder people because some rich guy wants them off the land he just bought? Or how about some dictator who wants to punish civilians without getting his hands dirty? There are many examples of this in our world today - pretty much anywhere you have valued resources and weak governments.
When people with money want nasty stuff done, they hire mercs.
A soldier fights for their country, their god, their family, etc. A mercenary just wants to get paid and typically doesn't ask a lot of questions.
Mercenaries are typically looked down upon by actual soldiers. That's because they are often the worst people, doing awful things, for money.
Service to others brings honour, respect, admiration, and gratitude. Service to oneself brings ignominy, and a handful of gold.
So you go out and hire the worst people, and find that they have a tendency to cause trouble for you? That not only makes perfect sense, it's also the theme of one of those quests that you can do for nobles, "A Company of Trouble" (or whatever it's called?). Mercenaries are troublemakers, that's why they aren't soldiers.
If you're playing as a King with your own kingdom, be advised that gameplay feature hasn't been fully fleshed out yet and it's not recommended for players right now. So, yeah, you'll get some issues and it's not surprising the one's you're describing are faction-related.
Some children should not have unsupervised internet access.
I happen to be an ex-military officer, and was offered mercenary work when I left the service.
