Bear in mind, you signed up to escort a merchant caravan...some merchants like to travel long distances due to profit being worth it to them...so im afraid you did, in fact, sign up for that ;)
@pfroddam, the solution is not playing the quest? pff...
Erm, and while I agree on the early access, lots of balancing to be done...It is an opinion...my opinion is that the many of the quests, with some exceptions, are good enough that a lot of my recent playthroughs involve seeking out quests and doing them...that is just my opinion though ;)
I had one quest starting in Baltakhand for 3 towns destination. First was Tyal (close and easy), followed by Revyl (almost other side of the map, might as well sell my spare horses), than it went back to Baltakhand to refill!!!! and final town Balgard.
after that quest I never again did escort personally, I would rather have all my companions run around
