They don't fare that well against proper armies with a good mix of combined arms. Infantry can screw them badly if they get stuck after the initial charge. You often lose quite a few of your elite troops in fights you could win with 0 losses with a more balanced army.
Also hill maps screw them badly when the AI just takes up a position on a hill and the horses can't charge.
Or all archers!
Or all infantry!
Or..even some combination of stuff might work
But the last several play throughs when I switched to using F1+F4 I prefer groups of mounted archers. They hang back out of range and shoot and can usually handle several times their number with minimal casualties.
Melee troops, even heavily armored knights, still can't handle 4 or 5 times their number without major losses, but groups of archers staying out of attack range circling the map in safety may kill more slowly, but they kill better.
While the enemy is trying to catch up to the mounted archers I gallop in their midst walloping them with either a two handed axe or a slashing pole arm while they're distracted and not paying attention to me.
I still like having melee knights on horseback, but they're not enough on their own against vastly superior numbers.
i defeat all cavalry easy with my spanish tercio tactics.
then why you write cavalry, when all you need is infantry ?
and like some other sayd... you can use every unit and win.
How? I'm telling my skirmishers to hold fire and they still slaughter vlandian cavalry just fine. They don't even have any damn spears.
You are using tight formations, right? Shieldwall, for example, not sure if any others are just as tight.
Stab only spears are reaally ♥♥♥♥. You need swinging polarms/two-handed weapons.
Cavalry is going to be extremely strong until devs decide to actually buff spear base stab speed and damage.
Only after 20 hours starting mixing in small amounts of calv that I lead while foot troops are running across map, it can help.
Like soften and make them disorganized and when main army arrives I dismount and join the fray
