Some pole arms have the ability to slash. In fact, I generally try to ONLY use pole arms which can slash. Those pole arms, however, still cannot slash if you use them one handed (with shield).
If you're not carrying a shield, a two handed pole arm capable of slashing will always be able to slash. But if you use a shield, it can only thrust.
To toggle between shield and not-shield if you're carrying a shield, use the mouse wheel toward you rather than the mouse wheel away. (Away switches weapons, toward you toggles shields)
A two handed axe has the ability to cleave through multiple opponents, but a slash from a pole arm has more reach.
Thus on horseback I like to use a slashing pole arms in the first stage of combat where I'm chasing down elusive cavalry, and then when I switch to the second phase where I'm fighting tightly packed groups of enemies I like to switch to the two handed axe.
If I could only carry one of the weapons (which some play throughs is the case), I prefer a good and long two handed axe. But in general I like to carry both two handed axe and two handed slashing polearm with ability to crouch (the crouch attacking being just for fun since it's not really useful in fights against many opponents).
But yeah, to recap, two hander skill is not for pole arms. One hander skill is not for pole arms. Pole arms can be used one or two handed. *laughs* They should probably add tool tips to the skills.
Ohhh shhhiiii yeah. Well I don't use Javelins anwyay but if did then I'd also get confused.
