the captain perks only work if they are the captain. your main-hero should only use "party perks"
i will never understand the reason for "hero troops". (you can force companions to fight in a group they normally cant fight cawse of her weapons they use, or make a "elite reserve" only with companions)
Now you can have them sit with a formation and follow those orders if you don't have a formation for them to lead. I haven't yet joined an army, and I'm curious to see if I can assign them as troops there so they have be given orders.
Only if you are the army leader. If you join an a.i. army, they decide who goes where as it concerns your companions.
