when the important clans loves you, start play vassal and king to recruit the clans you want. 1 clan of every culture is more then enough. (maybe 2 clans for empire).
This is why you need to put in the groundwork early. When you are at war, release every lord/lady prisoner to get the relation ship bonus. I normally keep releasing them till that clan has +90 standing with me. Then from that point on I will keep them prisoner to keep them off the battlefield.
You also need to be very careful which fiefs you siege. When you siege one it lowers your standing with the owner clan.
It is a balancing act to get and keep those relationships high to give you a better chance of recruiting them.
One last thing. Try to recruit before you take that factions last fief. It is generally easier to recruit clans who own no fiefs. Periodically check to see which clans in your enemy faction are fiefless.
