How to get rid of a settlement?
So I conquered a city from rebels while still being an independent clan. But some time later I realised that having a settlement makes it impossible to join a kingdom as a mercenary and I want to continue doing mercenary work, so now I'm trying to get rid of my city. I have already removed the governor and disbanded the garrison, but loyalty has eventually stabilized around 20 and that doesnt seem to be low enough to cause a rebellion.

Is there any other easy way to reduce loyalty further or to get rid of that city while staying independent?

One possibility -- Appoint a weak-ass bad governor of another culture. This will get you another -1 Loyalty.

Another possibility -- You'll need some cash, but try buying all their food every day. I have forced a rebellion in a town by buying up all the food in their market every day. Don't stay in the town because your very presence can boost loyalty and security. Just pop in, buy it all, and leave. When they are starving, Loyalty drops fast.

Yet another possibility -- Join a kingdom as a vassal, then resign from the kingdom. It will ask you if you want to keep your holdings. Say 'No', and the kingdom will take that town off your hands.

And finally -- Create a kingdom, recruit one lord, then abdicate. Leadership of the kingdom will pass to your one vassal clan, then you can resign and give up your holdings. (This one is theoretical, but if you give it a try, let us know how it worked.)

I don't know how to help you but can you create your own kingdom once you got a city,?

Yeah, I have the ability to do that, but I don't want to do that yet. I want to continue doing mercenary work for some time until I eventually create my own kingdom later.

Thanks! I wasn't aware that appointing a governor with the wrong culture would reduce loyalty even further, doing that was enough to finally get a revolt.

Wait until you get a offer to join as vassal. Accept, then just leave, and leave the fief behind.
