If your idea of fun is a lot of clicking..... at the verge of destroy your wrist and put down your computer mouse, sure.... -)
To make good weapons you need to unlock weapon parts. You do so by smelt down weapons in a category, and make weapons in one. Like... if you want to learn 2h swords, you make them and smelt them down. Or buy some on the market and smelt them down.
To unlock tier 2 parts, you need to first unlock tier 1 parts, to unlock tier 6 parts, you need to unlock all previous tier parts.
What quality weapons you can make depend on your smithing skill. So even you unlock all parts, you still need high skills to make something of quality that sell for a lot. Difference between try sell something rusty and awfull and something of masterwork or legendary quality. You can fine bang out something in the middle of the road at 6-10k value. Is it worth all the clicks though?
Did some smithing for a notable once, it was pretty tedious and I'll probably avoid it unless i want to make some uber weapon one day.
Do fighting and get some roguery up, and when you take on bigger and bigger enemy parties loot will ramp up and cover your needs and then some. On my current campaign on 1.2.5, just starting out spanking bandit parties, doing esscort caravans and such, tier 3 clan now and doing merc work, got half a mill or so there abouts, and that is enough to cover needs.
If you want to optimize loot value, you can smelt down trash weapons and turn them into something slightly more valued trash. without spend to much time on smithing.
Even without optimising loot as you described, I still make plenty and just discard rubbish extra loot sometimes. Foolish enemy lords are in abundant supply :P
I should start doing that smelting thing though, just to get some quick easy experience in the skill. NIce tips, cheers
As you progress, quests for villages can be very good, especially the one when they need labour and you got high tier bandit troops to give.
In the between, selling battle loot is a valid strategy
On 1.2.x so far I hardly spent anything, I had clans join me for free, even pay me. But they had no feifs and they did adore me so -)
