Why can only certain companions be governors?
When I appoint a governor I try to get one with the same culture as the town. But for some reason not all my companions seem to be able to be appointed to the governor role.
Even when one of my companions could previously be appointed to a town, for some reason they can not be appointed anymore. Does anyone know why this is happening?
I am running absolutely zero mods by the way and I am on the 1.2 beta.

Probably because they are doing something, like leading a caravan, an army or doing a quest for you. Could be captured too or recovering from emprisonement.

All companions can be governors, just make sure you have them in your party so they are free.

Nope to none of those, the character is happily sitting in my party with me. Maybe it is a 1.2 bug because I have seen it with another companion much earlier in the campaign.

They do not have to be in your party. You can call them to the town or castle you want them to govern, but they cannot be doing anything else.

And family members have to be 18 and not Holding or Regrouping/

And what mods have you installed and subsequently deleted or deactivated?

Try putting the companion in the settlement, then assign. Are they available for other things like caravans or quests or field party. The game might not be setting their state properly so it thinks they are not available.

How do you "put" them into a settlement without making them the governor, and YES they are available for all other tasks.

When in the town menu click the plus sign in the top right corner where the notable portraits are. If that doesn't work try assigning them another task and see if their status rests once they are finished, or cancel/disband them. If that doesn't work I have no idea.

I'll try than and see, as I mentioned this is not the first time have had this issue, but since I had appointed her a governor much earlier in the campaign, it came across as a little strange.

OP still has not answered this question --

He says he's 'running absolutely zero mods,' but has he ever had any mods installed and then either deleted them or disabled them?

It's important because mods can leave lint behind when you delete or disable them.

Strangely enough that worked, but I had to drop her off, leave the town and re-enter it.

Thanks for the help, it is an obvious bug that shouldn't be too hard to fix.

I had put on two different conversion mods, but after disabling them and verifying the cache (also the game was patched again) I assumed that there would be no residue.

And so the whole story comes out -- Mod lint. You can't just disable mods, and you have to delete them completely because they change ♥♥♥♥.

Here's how to delete mods completely -- https://steamcommunity.com/app/261550/discussions/17/2968397584539744282/

You'll need to reinstall to make sure your game files haven't been corrupted, and there's a good chance your save files are corrupted, too, so you might as well delete them, too.

Or you can live with that work around until something else gets borked.

Your acting as if I was trying to hide something, when in reality I missed your first post because I was busy trying to upload screenshots to make it as easy as possible for the issue to be resolved.
