Workshop not earning money - Doesn't make sense
Hi! I've done these things:

- They need to be placed in towns where there are connected villages producing the raw material needed for the workshop.
- There shouldn't be multiple of the same workshop in the same town.
- Wait a while until the workshop makes money.

In my case, I've got a Smithy in Balgard and a Wood Workshop in Sibir and I've waited for several in-game years. Both are the only workshop of their kind in their respective towns and both towns have villages coming in with raw materials.

Still the workshops don't earn any money. Does anyone have a clue?

do you mean no money at all? never? cause if you did the things you said that should be a bug. if that only happens for an amount of time then it simply could be that the depending village got raided and so on

i personally never bother with them. too much risk, too much work, too high cost and im a merc usually meaning if my work for kingdom switches and i get to war with the kingdom that has my workshops then bye bye. caravan snowballing all the way is my way to do it. party with 2000 per day costs and i still make a daily plus just from the caravans and if i then do a good merc job thats another 3000 a day

here is the screenshot with the party that i run atm, only got 4 caravans going tho cause its the end of early game for me and my units switch all the time cause i join armies to gain medicine skill level

Workshops are garbage.

for a shop the prosperity of a town is the most crucial.

Workshops can make money. Current playthrough, I have 4, the max I can have at clan level 3, and they average almost 300 denars a day each. You just have to have them in the right place and be making the right stuff.

And I have found that Sturgia is not the right place because they do not have the right stuff. They are overloaded with production that you cannot make into anything, like fish and furs. Nothing high profit, like a silver mine.

Plan on going to war with the Western Empire any time soon? There a nice little silversmith in Ortysia.

Those were my exact two first workshops. Now i have 6 and those two are by FAR the worst workshops. Dunno exactly why. They do make some profit but if I leave them to run by themselves they make like 10% of what others make.

I hope it's not a bug! I've tried it in two seperate playthroughs (same Smithy in Balgard though...). But might be, seeing as those villages supplying the raw materials have never been raided in my playthough as far as I'm aware...

I haven't taken this into account. I believe both towns I have workshops in are of "average" prosperity. Maybe I just need to look for more rich cities.

Leave them to run by themselves? Can you actively control workshops somehow? I thought the only thing you could do was buy them and then forget about them (or change production, but still).

I believe that it helps to buy the finished product to increase its price on the market.
I also dump my extra iron and wood (no such thing really as extra wood) into the warehouses

There are some workshop changes coming in 1.2. I don't remember specifically what they are, but I remember thinking they would be not just changes, but improvements. I believe one thing was you could bring raw materials to your workshop.

But I am old and could be having a senior moment.

Oh yeah. I'm playing beta. That is propably the same thing i meant by bringing raw materials to the warehouse.

In the beta you have warehouses in each town where you purchased a workshop. You can place raw material in the warehouses and set the production to be taken from them or from the town. I like to place war loot as it is free. Things such as hides/flax/wool, etc. depending on what type of workshop.

I favor the tannery because you almost always get animals after a battle or village raid. Slaughter the animals (cows/hogs/sheep) maybe horses, I have not tried. When you get a good amount drop them off at your warehouse.

Additionally, you can set the workshop to not sell and instead place all products into the warehouse. I imagine this is for trader types. They can later come by and gather the product for trading.

You can decide how much get stored, and how much get put on market. That way you won't flood the market. It's when supply on market exceed the demand and prices drop that your workshop get into problems.

Workshops such as wood workshops and smiths they produce items that isn't in high demand. Just check the towns daily consumption and you will see.
