when do children grow up?
my character died in battle very young, only a widow with a 4-year-old daughter remained. How long do I have to wait for the child to grow up? And is it better to start a new game than to wait until she grows up and gives birth to a new child? (the conqueror's man)

I'm curious too seems like forever, did they change the amount of days in a year? It didn't seem to take this long at release.

Each season has 21 days. Each year has 4 seasons. Each year has 84 days.

Children come of age at 18.

Are you playing campaign or sandbox? If you are playing campaign, you can rescue your family -- older brother, who is an adult; sister, who starts at 16 years old; and younger brother, who starts at, I believe, 14 years old. These will be available much sooner that your own children.

But if you are playing sandbox . . . well, that sucks. No siblings for you.

And in case you're interested -- The gestation period in Calradia is 1 season plus 15 days, or 36 days. The babies sex and clan is determined at birth, so you can take a save the day before the baby is due, and if you don't like what you got, or if the mother or baby died, you can reload that save.

As far as restarting -- You may have an interesting challenge if you play it out. Did you make your widow clan leader? If so, I think she can remarry and bring a new lord into the family. They they can have more babies. (But if you decide to try that, be sure to save first, just in case.)

If you marry daughter off when she reaches 18, she'll leave the clan to be with her new husband. Daughters leave, unless they are clan leaders. But she can be made clan leader, in which case, if she marries, she stays and her husband will join your clan.

now I understand that I probably shouldn't have started the sandbox. and besides, I can't choose who will be born to me because there is an iron will.

Patience, young padawan. The ox is slow, but the earth is patient. There is plenty to do in the meanwhile. Expand your holdings and build up your fortune so the second generation has the resources it needs to bring further glory to your clan.

And if you start over and play in campaign mode, you will get your siblings. One immediately, one if 2 years, and one in 4 years. If you marry the brothers off, you will have 5 family members that do not count against your companion limit. They can serve you while your children and nieces and nephews are growing up.

Note: If you do start over in campaign mode, I would recommend that you rescue your family, but ignore Neretzes' Folly. This will let that main quest expire harmlessly. The cool kids know that the main quest is fraught with heartache and despair, so they ignore it. You do not need to do the main quest to start a kingdom, and that banner sucks.

One more thing -- If you do start over, you might want to re-consider that iron man thing. There are enough things that are still a bit wonky or that rely totally upon random number generation that having the ability to reload could be a game saver.
