Where can I find good governors?
Hello

I just joined the Valandians, got married, and joined in a war against the South Empire.

We took 4 of the settlements, and for some reason Derthert took a shine to me and awarded 3 of them to myself (it was probably my amazing moustache that swung him over).

Unfortunately I dont have a huge group, and had no suitable characters who could increase the loyalty that was causing the settlements to revolt.

I travelled halfway around the empire and could not find a single empire character, let alone one who could govern effectively. This seems a bit dumb to me. Should there not be some characters somewhere?

Unfortunately the northern empire and green douchbags have now both declared war, and I will probably lose all of my settlements anyway and I am in the middle of a war zone and probably wont make it back... so all of this post is going to be pointless in the grand scheme of things.

But for what it is worth... Is there a more reliable way of finding decent people for my party?

Cheers!!!

Well you have multiple options. First when you start a new playthrough, if you plan ahead, you can make your family of a culture you are planning to govern. I guess works the best for the Empire, as same culture applies to all 3 parts. This way you start with 3 siblings that may become governors. Then you and your brothers get wives. That's another 3 characters. Pick wives of the culture you are planning to govern. Some wives have really good governing perks, so try to pick those, but over time, all characters will level up anyways. Once your children/nephews/nieces grow, you will have plenty more potential governors.

Last option should be companions.

But also keep in mind, you don't necessarily want to hoard all settlements for your clan. Your entire faction needs to grow, so make sure other clans get some too. If you have too many, donate them back to the kingdom (if you are a vassal) or grant them to your vassals if you are a king. Your faction will grow stronger and your allies will like you more for that too.

Of course, if you are playing sandbox, you have no family members other than your wife. which is why I don't play sandbox.

In my games, I find the 'best' governors are non-combat oriented NPCs. They tend to start low level so you have a lot more options in where you put there focus and attribute points, and more often than not, their spent points are in Steward/Leadership, both of which are good for governors. For the game, it's usually women, so you can set yourself and your two brothers up with wives that start weak, but level them up to be good governors.

Plan ahead. Get some companions of right culture You want to use for govenors later. Create some added party for them to run. They will start level skills that will be useful as govenor later. Some skills can be refocused at the arena trainer too.

The question should be:
What skills are useful for Governors.

As such anyone with that set of skills and is the same culture as the settlement you plan them to govern, is Perfect.

All that matter is the skills and the possibility to re-purpose them with cash at the Arena Trainer.
That is all, really.

Thanks for the responses.

My problem was that I could not find any empire NPCs to recruit anywhere in the empire. I thought there might be at least one somewhere ...

When we joined the Vlandians, they immediately declared war on the Southern Empire, and I ended up with 3 settlements within 10 minutes on top of another 3 gained. This must have been from my sheer awesomeness as I did not really do much other than take part in one of the sieges.

There was no early "planning" on our part. Being Vlandian myself, does it make more sense to join whomever is attacking Vlandia?

In any case it all went to ♥♥♥♥ when the Greens and Light Purples both attacked Vlandia and I lost both my Cities and all of the other gains from the previous war were lost... followed by half of Vlandia.

I am now stuck with Oristocorys castle which is a considerable gap from the rest of Vlandia. They have just lost Sargot and Jaculan. So taking a massive spanking at the moment. I can only recruit up to 90 people and carry around 35-40k in cash so I am not exactly built for large amounts of battlefield combat.

Oh... i just returned to find an 800 army outside of my Castle...

Hmmm... Time to take a swift stroll in an westerly direction... like a fart in the wind.

Does it kind of work to my advantage the we could retake Vlandian territory which I could gain and be able to manage without penalties? The Green guys took Sargot and Jaculan, and they are pretty weak. We just had to peace out with them. Hopefully we can declare war in a bit and recapture and not be fighting a war on 2 fronts

Gained 3 castles and a City on the south coast... Then lost the City and the one Castle which was well managed to the remnants of the Southern Empire, despite having only 2 cities left hey have a larger army than Vlandia.

I gotta be honest... I am not really enjoying this game. Not being able to have an army bigger then 90 v 1500 sized armies... I am at the mercy of the AI all of the time and if the rest of my faction will intervene.

Every time I get some territory I lose it straight away as I am on the front line every time a new war starts.

And now I am at minus 61 influence.

Well your party can eventually grow to about 400 with right perks, higher clan level and faction policies. Also as a vassal of a kingdom you can call other lords to your army and have better fighting chance against armies of your opponents. Don't try to do too much too soon though. Your power will grow over the (in game) years and you will gain invaluable experience for your next playthrough. Just enjoy the ride.
My personal recommendation is that you pick one of your companions and you start grooming them to be a governor. Ideally you get a comp of the culture you are planning to rule which will improve it and you also give them the quartermaster role. They will level stewardship while you travel.
Other than that, some companions are already prebuilt to be governors with high stewardship. You can also marry to bring ladies into your clan, a lot of them will have high stats
The culture though isn't a super big deal. If you find an imperial with good stats, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ A. But if you have to settle for a non-imperial governor, that is fine. It is a -1 modifier for a non-imperial governor but most good governors will give at least +2
