When you or your companions/family members or the a.i. Lords/Ladies are leading troops that is a Party.
A Party can form/create an Army. Either you or the a.i may create an Army if you are a faction member. You cannot do so if you are independent or a mercenary. Creating an Army requires Influence, unless you are creating one with your own clan parties.
Under no circumstances can one Party or Army call another Army to join or help them.
An Army commander can call other Parties to join them providing the called party is not already engaged or in another army.
If I become a vassal of a Faction I know that by using influence points I can call up other armies of the same Faction to form a larger army and go into battle ok?
Pulling this sentence out, because you mean parties here.
Party = 1 lord
Army = 2 or more lords. This group will also appear under the Army tab in your Kingdom window.
You can NOT call another army to join you. If two or more lords are already grouped together, you can't have them join your army. Their army needs to disband first.
Clan = one group
Faction = 2 or more clans
In order to create an army, you must first be part of a faction. Being a mercenary does not count. If you are independent, or part of no faction, you cannot create an army. You can create parties, using your family/companions as party leaders, but they will wander around and do their own thing. You cannot pull them into an army with you.
To create an army, you can go to the Kingdom window, then the Army tab. There should be a button that says Create Army. That will open a window with all active parties in your faction. Pick the ones you want to join you. Be advised that not all parties may be able to join you, either because they have too few troops, or they are part of another army.
Also, on the map screen, in the lower right, there's an icon of three flags. Click that to open the Army window and create an army there without having to go to the Kingdom tab first.
You must spend influence to call parties to your army that are not in your clan. If you are a vassal to a faction, you can create parties that your family/companions lead. You can call those parties to your army at no influence cost.
If you aren't a vassal (or a ruler) of a faction, you cannot create an army. You can create parties only.
It's important to understand the difference between 'party' and 'army' as the game defines them. By mixing them up and/or using them interchangeably, you're going to get confusing answers.
