Why are wanderers disappearing?

In the encyclopedia several wanderers I have met have simply 'disappeared'. Why?
How can I stop this from happening?

As far as I know, the game 'recycles' wanderers that you choose not to hire, assuming that you don't want them. Consequently, they disappear and are replaced with new wanderers after a certain period of time.

Choose? So because I didn't hire a wanderer immediately the game gets rid of them... great.

It's not instant, it takes months and years for one to disappear. It's instant when you hire one and then fire him later.

It's not instant, it takes months and years for one to disappear. It's instant when you hire one and then fire him later.

The time I responded this, 9 months ago, I did not have that information bacause the companion rotation was a recent addition to the game, and still in my game it was not frequent for a companion to "get lost"
