Footman on horses
Do Footman use any horse or only the horse that are meant for riding?

Footmen need real horses, not pack animals like sumpters or mules.

But footmen can also 'lead' a pack animal.

Ooh do I need a footman per pack animal & can you have more packhorses then footman?

the question is what is the max. of the bonus ?

yeah, the easy way to explain it is everyone can ride one horse and lead a pack animal for optimal speed, or they can lead 2 pack animals without herding penalty. but your cav already have 1 horse so they can only handle 1 extra

your speed will go down the more people in your party, so if you keep the ratio of horses correct, thats your max "bonus"

well i understand your question but knowing the answer helps nobody

the max bonus you would read for "footmen on horses" would be when you have 1 companion or 1 infantry troop and they have 1 riding horse and less than 1 other horse to handle. then the number would read the highest

maybe i'm wrong, maybe it goes up by a flat rate and the best bonus is with the most troops, but balanced out or hard countered by the "party size" factor

Your party speed doesn't give a crap about your party size if all of them are mounted troops or every single one are foot troops with one mount in your inventory. Each of those get one pack animal too. For this purpose sheep cows and pigs also count as party animals
You only get party speed debuffs when you have too many animals or you get some wounded who cannot contribute to your total party animals

this is wrong. you can see both the debuff of "party size" and the buff of "footmen on horses"

prove to me with multiple screenshots that these two are linearly tied

I dont need to. You can do it yourself in five minutes by hiring footmen, and giving them an exactly equal amount of non-pack horses. (when you see a little bag with a star, those are pack animals - sumpter, mule etc only count for weight of loot carried)

Each foot troop you hire can go faster with one non-pack horse and also can support one pack horse. if you go above that one to one to one limit you get a herding penalty.
