So first off. It is more important that your caravans have riding and scouting as your perks to avoid getting destroyed.
The can move quicker and see enemies from further away.
2. It also depends on the area the caravan is in. If its oversaturated with goods or too war torn it wont make money which leads to...
3. If your a merc, and a kingdom declares war on you, check and see if your caravan is in their territory. If it is then leave kingdom immediately or your caravan will get attacked.
Ok, also realize that caravan profits under this economy will fluctuate.
Finally caravans and workshops are not going to make you rich. They are there so you "don't lose money" allowing you to field a bigger, better force.
I can offer tips that might help make money
But if you don't have to be out there kicking ass and taking names all the time, caravans can make good money. You can, indeed, get as much as 1500 or more a day.
Hubris is right -- Riding and scouting are more important than trade. They'll develop the trade. (Hubris is right about all that other ♥♥♥♥, too.)
To quote yourself, caravans and workshops are not going to make you rich.
War, on the other hand, can make you rich. And war just tend to not mix well with caravans and workshops.
I would like to see caravans be smarter with their routes - not running through active war zones and all.
War or combat is the least risky and most profitable option, atleast if you dont count the near cheating like returns of crafting (no idea if they have fixed this, I havent played in years). As long as you pick your fights that is.
