You can also be knocked out in this phase and still win. I think it turns into a regular siege fight if you don't end it manually but your cavalry are on their horses in this mode and you can't place troops where you want them on the map so its probably not the best idea to let it run.
In noticed that if you sit out the siege after a while u get very short chances to sally out and ambush them. i think it's a bug cuz the time to click ambush is very short.

Cav is necessary because ambushes always happen by cav. It's a quick sally out to destroy siege engines and a few troops. They're allot of fun to do.
