This has been covered over and over again. Try searching this forum on 'workshop' to see what has been written.

do you work here?

People ask why their workshop isn't making any money at least once a week on this forum. It's usually a brewery. I reply with the same answer that I copied and pasted below.

Here's what's going on. That town drinks 5 barrels of beer every day. Your brewery is making 15 barrels of beer every day. Everybody in the town is excited to finally have a local brewery, so they drink a lot of beer for the weekend and you make money right at the start. Then the supermarkets become completely overloaded with your beer because they aren't drinking enough of it. The supermarkets put it on sale just to try to get rid of it. And your brewery keeps making more and more every day. Finally, the price of beer in that town is so low that the brewery furloughs its employees because it can't make enough money to keep the lights turned on. Your income drops to almost nothing.

To temporarily fix this problem, buy all the beer in the market. All of it. Now travel the world and sell it everywhere. You'll notice after a day or two that the brewery will start making profit again. This is because suddenly the supermarket shelves are empty of beer and the citizens want some after a hard day's work.

Another fix is to increase the prosperity of the town. As we all know, rich people drink lots of beer, so the citizens there will buy more.

Also, you could kill all the bandits in the area to encourage trade caravans to stop by and buy more beer to help keep the supermarket shelves from becoming so overloaded.

Finally, you could buy the breweries in the neighboring towns and change their production to something else. This decreases the number of breweries in that part of the world. This results in trade caravans only being able to buy beer at your town. The price of beer goes up in those neighboring towns, so it's easier to sell there. You basically form a regional monopoly.

Breweries never make money, even if you take the time to create a monopoly.

Claytonium’s post, while not necessarily wrong, barely does anything to describe how workshops work. Also, breweries in general sort of suck right now. They’ve received many nerfs.

Every time you start a new game, workshops are randomly generated in towns.

The multiple factors that impact workshops are;

1-how many of the same workshop are in the town.

2-how many of the same workshop are in ANY town in the general area

3-caravans entreating the town

4-bandits stopping peasants from selling input materials to the town

5-the quantity of finished goods the town has

6-the town’s wealth

7-is there a war happening?

8-a little bit of RNG.

Workshops are a waste of money and their mechanics are a broken mess.

I see you guys have good knowledge about workshops so I will ask similar question.

Vlandia conquered a lot of Aserai territory. Including Quyaz and few castles around. After that I bought an Oil workshop. It's only one in town. Olives are plenty (100+) and cheap (8-12 gold). Oil have red prices. After many days (30+) my workshop didn't make any oil at all. I even switched production and then switched back to Oil to no avail.
Could it be a bug?

So olives are 8-12 denars, but what is the price of oil in that town? My guess is that it's about the same price as olives.

Yeah, even "profitable" workshops aren't really worth the trouble. Either you're a vassal and just don't have anything to spend money on or you're a ruler where the income is just irrelevant compared to expenses. Warmongering is really the only meaningful source of income, with owning multiple strong towns a distant second.

As I said, price was red. 140 or something like that.

Problem solved itself. Aserai reconquered all its territory and my workshop started to work. Why? I don't know xD
After war price of oil dropped to ~70 and shop is still working. Only 150-200 per day but hey, it's working
Claytonium Mar 15, 2023 @ 10:47am
Quyaz is right next to a bottleneck to the north west. It sounds like the Vlandians were at war with a few other kingdoms and weren't letting many caravans through that bottleneck. So nobody was buying your oil and supplies were piling up from your workshop. Thus the price of oil was dropping below the production cost. Once the Vlandians got pushed back north, trade opened back up. That's just a guess, though.
Catteus Of Mars Mar 15, 2023 @ 2:10pm
the point of having workshop isnt to get denars from the workshop... its to get cheap produce and sell it elsewhere only takes bout 100 years to break even :D

I assume you guys reading that "brilliant post" are all very very new. That is "how workshops work" and have for about 2+ years. it has been Written by many of us (like me) about 10 billion times, answering people how workshops work.

Sadly..... as OP noticed. Breweries are NOW affected more harshly than other workshops.

This is because for almost 3 years.. ALL WORKSHOPS were inferior to breweries (and some workshops were downright TERRIBLE compared to breweries). Devs nerfed breweries (which makes sense for a lot of reasons).. and NOW the people who played in the past say "hey... wait a minute my 8 breweries that used to all make 700-900 denars a day each, now make nothing.. whats up?"

Answer: Breweries were made More realistic.. you now need to focus on other workshops.

Which leads me to this "Brilliant post" above. lol...

Pro tip: what he says "works" and so do other "things"... but know what else works?? and works better???? Putting the right workshop (i.e. not brewery) in that town. In fact, it works better.. and then if you do all the workshop-manipulation tricks, you will make REAL profit... not a little bit of profit from boosting your terrible brewery"
