Also, If you want to counter cav charges with archers, I recommend f2 f5 (square). By making them densely packed, it makes it harder for the cav to plow through your units.
If I'm facing horse archers, First thing I do is put infantry in skein formation and put my archers behind them, with cav on either side, when they try to loop around my infantry, I cut off their escape and move the other flank to kill them.

If the enemy are stronger - to stay somewhere at the safe position at the corner of the map and wait till enemy are killed by your ranged troops.
