End of the day, its a sandbox, you do whatever you want to do. There is no one around to hold your hand and tell you what to do..
This is a sandbox
I chose to start with one castle. You will also get some troops and 2 clan members who come with decent size parties of their own. But I do not recommend this choice for beginners, because you have almost no chance against neighboring kingdoms, who will soon attack you, while you are still low with skills and money and their troops are still full of high tier men.
There are many other choices though, maybe you find something you like. Or if the start is difficult, you will at least get to see what the future holds.
I do recommend checking other mods too. They add so much quality of life improvements, and also game contents. Some of them may be good helps in the early game.
One of them is "No Bandits No Cry" mod, which enables to control the size of looter and bandit parties. Soon you will find them looters too easy, with the mod you can increase the number of men in their parties (and the number of parties) and you will get more loot and experience fighting them.
Another I would recommend from the start, is "Recruit Everyone". You can recruit any civilian you meet in towns and villages, and they will join as your companion. Companions have added bonuses compared to normal troops: you can equip them, decide their skills and they are less likely to die if they get knocked down in combat. You can also increase the number of companions that can join you,
"True Battle Loot" and "True Army Costs" let your tweak the game harder or easier, if you have problems with denars. I have chosen that in recruiting troops I also must pay full price of their equipments, to make it more realistic (this might be the default setting too, I don't remember any more). It's not really a problem after a while: loot you get in wars makes so much money your king will die ridiculously rich.
In the mean time in the major towns visit the Arena and try a few Practice Fights. Remap your combat Keymapper settings as needed, and make some gold in the Practice Fights while you're learning the ropes. I actually have done hundreds of practice fights to make gold and to learn the basics whenever I come back to this game.
Look for the blue exclamation marks for quests. DO NOT take all the quests though. Some are suspect in the description. If you don't finish them in time you take a reputation hit. Read the quest description, write down what they're asking for and town they're in, say you can't do the quest right now then get the items and come back later. I'd usually focus on one quest at a time until it's finished. In the mean time read all the quests you come across and keep track of them on a notepad. If farmer Johan needs 3 mules, you'll come across mules to buy somewhere nearby. Get the mules, come back to Johan, take the quest then immediately finish up.
Visit Taverns and see if there are any companions or mercs for hire.
I gave the game a try over the last two days.
I hunted other parties, did some trading, won a lot of tounaments, did some smithing and hired some companions.
I also did some quests, saved a child from beeing murdered, bought 2 sheep and 1 tool for a village, cleared some bandit hideouts, delivered a herd of cattle, etc.
The battles are impressive and the number of diffferent units too.
But it somehow gets very repetitive.
Is there somethnig else I can do in this sandbox?

Be careful, because a lot of these date back from 2 years ago or more, and many are written by people who don't have the slightest clue or what they are doing and whose advice is worth exactly what you paid for this game.
