The game is rigged.
monster hunter is a jump and run, its for little kids.
edit: ok, i read a little more and you can change attack direction in game-settings!
same with melee hits. they often wont go off at all on low skill. skill in game numbers simply overwrite player actual skills and actions. that is how clunkiness comes into play, mostly. that is, besides very clunkiness is in game animations themselves.
coming with pretty vast experience of combat games as soulslikes, nioh, it is very obvious, how lacking is face to face combat. but what can you do? either not play or accept. i do not see anything else. combat is very simplistic, simple. hard to read when people complain that combat in bannerlords is hard. it is not. just mechanic is clunky.
And it has been this way in M&B games for as long as M&B games have existed. Your player is handicapped at the start, as are all other characters in the game.
This is NOT a "novel" or unusual mechanic in first person games with a character progression or role playing dynamic. It is in fact, the norm in those types of games: 7 Days to Die; SCUM; State of Decay; Red Dead series; etc., etc., those are just the couple I could think of off the top of my head . . .
I think if the developers of Kingdom come, Tale worlds, and the guys from Crusader kings 3 joined together they could make an amazing Medieval game..
Until then this is as good as it gets. lol
If you still struggle with swords switch to a fast swinging ax or mace...
I have heard that 2 hand swords are deadly while mounted, but I prefer a spear and ax for if i get stuck in melee.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Not a bad idea. I seem to remember Kingdom come controls being pretty good.
Both make good points. Once you've leveled athletics and have a weapon with the right reach, combat feels easy.
Kingdom come is definitely a better comparison. This issue for me is being able to easily input the command I want.
Monsterhunter an arcade klicker-hero combat...
No point in comparing them....
If you would compare M&B to Kingdome come deliverance....
Both directional combat, both focus on "realism", both Medival "simulator style"
Yeah that would make sense....
and BTW
KCD Combat is so so SOOOOOO much superior to Butterlords Combat....
But then KCD´s biggest battles feature 20v20 actors max and this only in like 2-3 story battles....
And they are already quite performance heavy on my I7-12700KF+64GB ram+all7000ms NVMEs+ 3080ti....
Most of KCDs battles are 1v1 or 1v2-3 however....
Having bannerlords 500v500 battles with KCD level combat....
Prob not until Quantum processing is Mainstream LMAO
Could it be better? sure
Do animations look super goofy? yep
Are some weapons/formations absolute trash? yeah
Is the AI braindead? it is
Can 95% of all battles be solved with F1+F3? Hell yeah
Is the game still a Beta despite the full release tag? Boii oh boii it is...
But comparing M&B to arcade adventures like monsterhunter.... thats a shame....
Lol. Lockpicking was a challenge in that game for a while, But when you figure out the technique its fun... It isn't needed to play the game though..
If you spend the first 8 hours of the story picking flowers to increase your players strength Kingdom come is a pretty good game..
Could have been much better, but its good.
