You have to buy low and sale high,, make a profit.
basically your COMPANIONS will get trade xp , if THEY are leading a caravan (and even that wasn't the case when game first came out.. and it STILL SAID OPERATE CARAVANS FOR TRADE XP)
Anyway, Yep.. you the main character get no xp from caravans.
You DO GET xp for buying low and selling high. If you did NOT see xp, there are a few reasons (you are Trade xp capped, it is small enough that it did happen but you didnt see, the AVERAGE price for the goods u bought is HIGHER than the selling price u sold them for.. even though the last grain you bought was 8 gold, and u sold it for 9.. the AVERAGE you bought all grain in inventory for could be 9.2 etc)
You SHOULD see trade xp go up. I do, always.. So I know it works.
yeah. you dont see AVERAGE price, of all the grain in your inventory (for example). yeah it IS ONE OF the most annoying skills in the game (I;ve been yelling for years, it still needs reworked)...
But you CAN level trade. I just (last campaign) took my character to trade 300 (actually 301) legit. no mods. no cheats.
It was a long grind.
Basically u take the perks to help you see (those are actually automatic) profits.. and as you keep climbing the Trade Tree just pick ones to help u trade. (most do not).
U can do it with 9 attribute in INT, and 5 in Trade (Maybe even less. I'm too lazy too look) but it slows down so much at the end, I just took INT to 10.
Now, you want some pack animals.. lots. and just walk the map, over and over and over (yep.. it turns the game into a WALKING SIM). you buy stuff at GREEN PRICES.. and Sell them at next town for GREEN SALE PRICES). You always want bright green to buy, and bright green to sell.
But...... it never works out the perfectly, you will sometimes have to sell for minimal profits.. And sometimes thee next town which was supposed to be buying for 20 denars MORE, is now buying for 10 denars LESS.
it is a broken, imperfect, non-intuitive, Grindy mechanic..
It can be reached though (trade 300)
One thing to keep in mind, the VAST majority of people don't know... is that Recently (since official release) the goods need time to STABILIZE. The prices you get them from early are vastly vastly vastly different than late game. (it was always slightly different, but in the olden days u could trade efficiently from day 1.. Now, it is best to start after a month or two.. and even better HOARD lots of end game items if u get em cheap... like TOOLS. then sell them LATE game, when High prosperity towns are buying tools for 500+ each)
anyway. good luck
What trips up most people I think, is that for every sale the price moves. It is not like many other games where it is a static price. If you see 100 silk for example in a market with a price of 50. The first one you buy you will pay 50 for. the second one a little more, and so on. You may get to your destination and want to sale that 100 silk thinking you paid 50 for the whole stack, but you did not. Only for the first.
It works the same way when you sell something. The listed sell price is only for the first one you sell, after that each one gives you less and less.
It is a dynamic market. With each sell or buy altering the price of an item, "on the fly".
Caravans are to make some money early game, let your companions/family members get some xp. Best used when you are still independent and have no enemies.
I've NEVER seen, nor HEARD of anyone NOT BEING capped in xp.. and buying something for 20 selling for 80 and NOT getting xp.
Again,, this is after thousands of hours of playing, and hundreds (if not thousands) of hours reading and answering forum questions.
So my THEORIES are
1- You are mistaken, you DID NOT buy for 20, and sell for 80... or
2- You Bought for 20.. but had 50 of them in inventory u bought for 300 (example), sold one for 80... and IT WAS NOT PROFIT.. since the average price u paid was over 80
3- you have a mod conflict or MOD bug
4- you have a VANILLA bug
5- you are TRADE XP capped.
6--- and this one is tricky----- If you cheat mode. you can BUG your skill xp if u give it the wrong amount of xp.. and I don't know the formula to cause the bug... I'll explain
You want to test scouting and see the speed buff (like I did last night). I gave myself 7 cunning, 5 scout points. I then SLOWLY gave myself xp.. 50k scout xp.. added the perks. 50k more scout xp.. added the perks. etc.. As I climbed higher, I gave myself 200k xp.. climbed higher etc.
Now, I got to 279.. and I WAS NOT RED CAPPED.. but no matter if I gave myself 1 more xp.. or 100,000,000 I still got no more xp.. But I SHOULD have gotten enough to raise all the way until I RED CAPPED at 288.
Even worse, if I would have started at lvl 1.. and just gave myself 20,000,000 (estimate) it would have taken me to TRADE 450 (estimate) which is not possible to reach...
So.. GIVING xp through cheat commands is tricky and can be buggy.. oh and that 279 I had.. I can NEVER RAISE IT AGAIN, in that campaign, it is bugged. EVEN though I can theoretically go to 288.
So those are my possible reasons why u arent getting xp.
As to "I can never raise trade". yeah u can day 1. Go to zeonica buy grain for 12.. run to poros sell it for 38. you WILL see it go up. no need to see the "green" colors on prices, because we KNOW YOU JUST BOUGHT A BUNCH at 12-14... and SOLD that amount for 38-36
When u get to trade 25, u can see YOUR profits.
When u get to 50. you can see if you SHOULD buy grain in zeonica (it is BRIGHT GREEN.. meaning it is CURRENTLY below the WHOLE MARKET AVERAGE IN ALL OF CALRADIA).
etc
In Battania there is villages that sell wood as low as 5, and you can sell it to towns at 40ish. Bumps early trade quite fast.
good point. I use it too.
Seonon. (and the villages around it).
But I always use ZEONICA ---> Poros in my advice to newer people. since they start right next to poros.
but you are correct, the SEONON wood (selling around aserai usually) is much better early game profits. just takes longer to get to.. and do. (since u literally start right next to poros).
There has been a lot of both good and bad, and some just vague information. I'll tell you what I do to get my trade going.
When playing Campaign mode, where everyone starts near Poros, I take advantage of the fact that prices haven't normalized yet. I go to the village nearby that sells Sheep, and I buy ALL of their sheep (about 50 coins each). I take them to Lycaron, and slaughter the whole flock, getting 1 meat and 1 hides from each, which usually nets me about 2k.I then go back to the other village near the training field, and buy all of their Hogs (roughly 30 coins per), and do the same slaughter-sell thing in Poros. Should have about 5k in the bank at this point, but since I haven't done any direct resale for profit, no Trade points yet.
At this time Hogs should be available in Poros for about 30-35 a pop. Buy their whole stock, paying extra attention to how much you ended up paying for the very last hog. Should end up costing about 45 or so for the last one, because price goes up as you deplete the Market's stock.
You should be able to sell hogs for 70 or so in Zeonica. Use the Shift key to add them 5 at a time to your sell order until the sell price is just above whatever the price was you pad for the last hog in Poros. That should give you about 1k coin and about 10-12 Trade points, depending on how you are specced.
Now I make a circuit between Zeonica, Jalmarys, Amitatys, Lycaron, Poros, and Vostrum, figuring out which ones have what workshops, what's in demand where. Usually can get a good cycle of Leather, Jewelry, Oil, Tools, Linen, Velvet, and Pottery going. This is where you will start to see nice gains in Trade. If I am feeling sassy I will even take notes about what I have bought and sold stuff for, but I'm usually pretty lazy about it and just try to remember.
Once I get my Trade skill to 75, and take the Traveling Rumors perk, I put my whole cadre of henchmen as Caravan leaders. Every time they stop at a town they update the trade rumor network, and I know exactly where I can go to maximize my profits. Oil, Jewelry, and Velvet are the BIG earners, and you can really see some serious gains on your Trade skill there.
Once you are at this point, you can get your Trade to 300 without too much effort.
"When playing Campaign mode, where everyone starts near Poros, I take advantage of the fact that prices haven't normalized yet. I go to the village nearby that sells Sheep, and I buy ALL of their sheep (about 50 coins each). "
you are walking at 1.0
