I'm thinking its random, Clovis. I've married Liena a lot over the years and my last playthrough was rough getting kids with her. While my brother and Arwa popped out 6.

I think, the best wife is Leany of Vlanden and Yana of Kuzait.
Yana could be a main hero only die to fact, her clan leader - Mesui is also not married.
So I choose Yana for the main hero and Leana - for the brother.

Liena and Yana have highest steward skill. So, they could lead bigger army, are better as guvernor and have both wonderfull fight abilities.
