Donating equipment
I'm not entirely comfortable that I'm doing this correctly. I really wish there was a distinct button for donation (and if there already is, I haven't seen it),

My imperfect understanding of how this works is that discarding equipment is the same as donating it.

Does discarding count as donating any time you do it, or can you only do it immediately after a battle ?

And why is the experience gained text at the bottom of the middle screen sometimes in red and sometimes in white.

Does discarding only count as donation when the text is white, or does the red text mean that there is wasted experience ?

I really wish you go a little message somewhere on the screen after a donation that says something to the effect that the equipment you gave up generated x amount of experience for the troops in your party.

Also, I like to salvage a few items (usually the food) before I discard. Shouldn't that lower the experience gain ?

Do I understand what's going on or am I missing something?

I've never tried the perk myself in game, because I consider the other option of reduced wages while in army much better choice, but it seems to work just like that. If you have the perk, discarding armor grants half its value as troop XP.

Look at the steward tree for perks on donating equipment. There are 2. One for weapons and one for armor. Food does not count.

It only works if you have the perk even if xp is on bottom of screen.
You can donate any time not just after battle. In fact i.prefer not too

White means they ll get all xp red is over the max xp they can get

What if my party's steward companion has the right perk but my character doesn't ?

I haven't tested this yet, but I assume it works since the perk indicates "Quartermaster", meaning it should work when a companion with that perk is assigned as quartermaster in the party.

You had alot of questions. Hope i answer them all now.

It´s only body armor that counts, horse armor also. Weapon, shields, food, and trade items those you can keep.

When it´s red, it´s more armor then needed, Keep some and donate after you upgrade. I have seen it green once! Usually just white and red. You can donate anytime. Just open the inventory aslong as you have the right quartermaster. It is an quartermaster perk (there are 2 of them).

Hopefully this will be better. If you hower over the items donating one can see some red and some yellowish. They seem to both count. In my opinion the red ones should not count.

So when the text is red. Sort by price and keep the expencive ones to sell or donate after. That is the bug in my thinking

there is the next perk in the same sewtard line with donation of weapons for the XP.
There count all melee weapon you have.

all armor can be donated with the first perk, all shields, weapons and quivers can be donated with the second. just discard the items and the vultures will scavenge

Keep in mind that the xp per item is capped at a quite low level (300 iirc). No point in donating a 3000 gold item.

On a side note, I have always found this a weird and gamey mechanic ever since it has been put in. I understand we needed perks, but this feels like scraping the barrel of ideas a little bit.

"Let's give that veteran soldier a whole bunch of tattered rags, some pitchforks and blacksmith hammers, and some pieces of headcloth, that should turn him into a legionnaire soon!"

Even rags can come useful in binding a wound or dislodged limb. Honestly, it shudders me to think what kind of conditions military of old would work.

Any game mechanic which involves XP one way or another is almost always automatically gamey.

I think it´s a bug. Scroll over them and you see the donation exp color is different.

I only have the armor donation perk, so during looting I use transfer all to put it on the party's side of the inventory screen, and then I go to the armor only button and transfer all back.

If the text is red I remember the amount of xp shown (this is the maximum the party can accept to reach next tier) then transfer it back again to the party inventory and then give the items back again one type at a time with control + click on their arrow, from the cheapest to the most expensive. Once the text turns red I take back cheap items until the text turns white, then re-add the cheapest item so it's red again. It seems like a long process describing it but usually only takes a few seconds.

EDIT: Remember to favorite armor you want to keep if you use the transfer all button like that. I also did that for weapons to smelt later when selling loot to the city markets. Also handaxes and sickles from looters for the Gang Needs Weapons quest.

Fight and win a battle. After the battle, it brings up the loot screen with all the weapons/armor/horses/food on the left side, and all the stuff your party is carrying on the right side. At the bottom somewhere it will say something like "donate items to gain 1000 XP for troops." If you leave all the items in the left side of the screen and click next, your troops will get that XP. If you start moving weapons or armor to the right side of the screen, the XP number will start to decrease depending on what you decide to keep.

Edit: woops, I think you knew all of this after rereading your comment. Sorry.

Good to spell it out though because somebody reading this might not.
