What's a good way of farming Renown?
Title. Working towards establishing my own kingdom and renown is slow to earn and fighting bandits and winning tournaments is a slog.

Tournaments is the most reliable way to earn if you are not part of a faction. If you are in a faction grab as many troops as you can and fight those big fights for big renown and some rep. That's the TL;DR. Guess you could grab an army and start a fight with a minor faction if you're dead-set on not joining another faction, though it'll be hard finding them, and funding your army.

Just pick fights with factions and release their lords after the fight. Good money, good renown and they will even like you more for it x)

Fastest renown always comes from defeating lords (or taking castles/towns). Tournaments and bandits are only useful for renown in the very early game.

Correction, pick a fight with allll the factions!

You can always just pay for peace when it is useful. Seriously, in my lastest campaign I am a stonethrow away from clan tier 5 on day 56. And the loot...

Just pay them for peace once you need to offload. They dont ask for much, depending on their situation they are even willing to pay you at times.

And, I wouldnt generally take prisoners. It slows you down. Need for speed and all that.

Is it possible to merc for a faction without permanently committing to them as a way to get renown?

prob being a merc and go from war to war as a lord hunter, just fight multiple lords per day and you should get a ton of renown, as a nice side gift also a ton of money.

As an alternative, get your Trade skill to the point where you can take the perk that gives you renown for profitable caravans, and send all of your companions and family out to run caravans.

i dont play with age on but i always wanted to use my main char 100% only to prep everything for my actual char, his son.
push out a ton of caravans to do what you wrote.
bring smithing to max so that i can smith the best weapons for him
make a duck ton of money so that i would never need to care about that
and maybe even get some rebelion towns under me ready to start a kingdom

Depends if you just started or how far you are in campaign.

Early game: pick up fights with looters as horse archer, Tournaments are trash unless you will be a Tournament Champion plus there are some perks that also give +1 renown daily

Mid game: pick one faction and join army, follow it around, dont be afraid to peace out when AI does stupid things
