Children and non-combat characters
Started my first game yesterday, was given a high level NPC companion to ride with me during the tutorial, and they let me set all his accumulated skill points. I decided to make him a godly warrior, only to later find out that he is no longer usable in combat, and can only be set to manage, in non-combat roles... FML.

Now, I'm having children, and being asked to level them up without knowing if I'm gonna get shafted again. Are children usable in combat when they mature?

As combatants?

Also, I hope this comment means that I'll get more opportunities to increase their skills before then, because after the first set of skills I was able to apply to my child, their stats were fairly mediocre.

You will have several opportunities to improve their stats, then after they turn 18, they will join you. They also come with unassigned attributes and focus points.

Are you talking about your brother from the tutorial? He'll come back after you reach clan level 1. You'll get a chance to rescue him and your two other siblings. He comes with a ♥♥♥♥-ton of attributes and focus points.

You other brother and sister also come with unassigned attributes and FPs when they turn 18.

Unless you've crapped your game up with a bunch of mods, then anything goes.

You can still use him for combat, it just isn't explained very clearly without reading mouse tooltips. Open your Clan menu (L default), click on his name in the members section on the left, then you'll see a big layout with a summary of his name, all his skills and such on the middle/right. Near the top of that is a little circular arrow looking button which will tell him to come to your party from his location. It may take a few days, depending how far you are from where he is stationed, but he will join your party to be usable in combat. Same goes for your wife/kids/whatever else after they turn 18 years old.

But... He's BEEN in my party since he rejoined after leaving for a bit after the tutorial. He's listed in the character menu, but like my daughter, isn't listed in the inventory menu, or army deployment screen.

I guess he's my brother... I tend to not pay attention to paragraphs of dialogue. I'm only using one mod -- Improved Garrisons.

He did return to me, along with a couple other characters, but they're unusable in combat.
