Some missions will always result in loss of mercy or honor, and should be avoided if you want traits.
I don't know if it means free them after a battle or free a friendly NPC from captivity (which doesn't seem like a very reckless thing to do and not very calculating), I just read it from some wikipage.
A post from 2021 on taleworld forums suggest convincing enemy lords to defect is the only functional way to get calculating points unless they have changed or fixed something since then. Though as the other post said you can get it at character creation, as your selections lead to different traits at start.
