is smithing currently glitched?
no matter how much i smith the highest difficulty weapons (with the tier 1-2 parts that i have available) and no matter how much i smelt those same weapons, i cannot get a single part of a higher tier (meaning if i craft and smelt t2 weapons i only get t2 parts).
any way of getting higher tier parts without spending 60+k on a single high tier weapon and getting a shoddy wooden handle?

Unlocks are tiered now, and you must unlock all parts of the previous tier before parts of the next tier will begin unlock. It has little to do with the tier of what you smelt or smith, and is simply tied to experience gain(value) for the item. The part that you unlock in a given tier is random, so weapon groups that have a lot of parts like two handed swords will take longer to unlock everything than something with fewer parts like two handed maces.

Not glitched. You just do not understand how it works. As previous poster said -- You have to learn, for example, all T2 blades for 2H Polearm before you can get T3 2H Polearm blades.

Best way to unlock parts is to smelt the weapon type you want to learn. Either buy them or make them. If I am wanting to learn 2H polearms, I make a bunch and then smelt them. There is a random element in which parts you get, so save first, then reload if you don't like what you get.

Higher tier weapons yield more parts, not better parts. You still have to have all T3 before you get T4.

And get yourself the smithing perks Curious Smelter and Curious Smith.

You don't expect to unlock parts for other weapons types do you by just smelt one type of weapon?

Smith crappy daggers... smelt the same crappy daggers. Learn some new parts. Make new crappy daggers with the new parts. Smelt the same crappy daggers with these new parts. Learn some new parts, rinse and repeat... Make sure you take perks that increase learning parts through smithing, and smelting.

I tested smiting, and the tier system is actually easier than before at least for 2h axe...not so sure about dagger thou

Those pugios are only Tier 1, so they won't unlock much. To really unlock parts, you need to be smelting higher tier weapons. If you have T2 or greater dagger parts, make some better weapons, then smelt those. Then keep rinsing and repeating like Ruffio said.

But daggers and throwing daggers, while a good source for smithing materials, don't bring good profits, so unless you have your heart set on T5 daggers, you would be better served smelting and forging 2H swords or 2H polearms. Higher tier = more parts.

If you get a lot of pugios its easier to just smelt them down to use the raw materials in smithing other weapons to sell for profit, than have to keep refine iron to steel to fine steel etc. Once you can start smith weapons of any value. I just trade them for other weapons on the market I know will unlock parts when smelt them down. For some items, its the fastest way to unlock parts. Such as for axes, javelins, polearms, maces..

Everybody is. Old news. I think it happens when you mess with the blade or handle length. It does not affect the performance of the weapon.

I file this under WGASA -- Who Gives a ♥♥♥♥ Anyway.

Always do the orders for customers. They give the most weapon parts experience.
