Dragon Banner support imperial faction?

What really happens if you choose to support an existing imperial faction? I have not been able to google it, only hget infor about creating your own kingdom. Which is not my plan in this playthrought but to take over western empire.

The same thing as would happen if you create your own kingdom. You eventually end up at war with everyone at the same time after doing a bunch of pointless quests that just slow that moment down a little. It's worth doing once just to see how it works, but most people stop doing the quest as soon as they rescue their brother/sister. There is no penalty for letting the "create the dragon banner" part of the quest just time out and fail.
